How to choose the right rug for your space

What size rug do I need?

Size up, since too small is the usual mistake. In a living room, choose a rug large enough to sit under at least the front legs of all the seating, ideally under everything, with about 8 inches of floor showing around the edges. Under a dining table, add 24 inches beyond the table on every side so chairs stay on the rug. In a bedroom, run the rug well past the sides of the bed.

How do I match a rug to my floor and room?

Work with contrast: on dark hardwood, choose a lighter rug to lift the space; on pale floors, pick a deeper or patterned rug to add definition. Bouclair's rugs come in natural, beige, off-white, black, green, and multicolour, so they work with warm and cool floors alike. Pull one colour from your existing décor into the rug to tie the room together.

Can I layer rugs?

Yes, layer for warmth and texture. Start with a large neutral or natural-fibre base rug, then centre a smaller patterned or textured rug on top. Layer rugs especially over hardwood or to define a seating area in an open-plan space, and keep the base simple so the top rug stands out.

Where should I use an outdoor rug?

Use an outdoor rug beyond the patio too, since its durable, easy-clean weave suits entryways and high-traffic spots indoors. Anchor a patio seating area or define a balcony with one. Coordinate it with your cushions, throws, and rugs, or shop a curated collection where our designers have paired the rug with the room.
