How to choose the right blinds and shades for your windows
Which type of blind or shade suits each room?
Choose by how much light and privacy each space needs. For living rooms and home offices, use roller shades for clean, modern coverage that disappears when raised. For bedrooms and dining spaces, pick roman shades to add a soft, tailored fold. For kitchens, go with faux wood shades, which handle humidity better than real wood.
How do I measure my window for blinds?
Decide first whether the blinds mount inside the frame for a built-in look or outside it to make the window appear larger. For an inside mount, measure the frame opening at three points and use the smallest width and height. For an outside mount, add a few inches on every side. Measure precisely, because blinds and shades cannot be trimmed like curtains.
What colour blinds work best?
Default to neutrals for flexibility: choose white, off-white, grey, charcoal, or linen tones. Use lighter shades to keep a room open and let the blinds recede into the wall; reach for charcoal or deeper greys when you want contrast and a contemporary edge. Since blinds are a longer-term fixture than curtains, pick a versatile neutral the room can evolve around.
Should I pair blinds with curtains?
Layer them: mount blinds or shades for precise daytime light control, then frame the window with curtains or blackout curtains for softness and full darkness at night. For a shortcut, browse our curated collections, where our designers have already paired window coverings with the rest of the room.
