How High to Hang Pendant Lights Over a Kitchen Island or Dining Table

Pendant lights are a beautiful way to light a kitchen island or dining table, but getting the height and spacing right makes all the difference. Here are a few rules of thumb to help you hang them like a pro.

Kitchen island pendants

How high to hang them

Hang pendants 30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm) above your countertop. This gives you comfortable, focused light without blocking sight lines across the kitchen.

How many pendants and how far apart

Start by finding the centre point of your island.

  • Short islands (6 to 7 ft): two pendants usually work best, with 30 to 36 inches between the widest parts of the shades.
  • Longer islands: use three pendants and hang the first one right in the middle of the island.

The space between each light should be at least the width of one fixture, and each pendant should hang at least 6 inches (15 cm) from the edge of the island.

Large pendants

A single large pendant should be installed at the centre point of the island and take up no more than two-thirds of the island's length.

Dining table pendants

How high to hang them

Hang your fixture 30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm) above the dining table. A dining room pendant traditionally hangs over the centre of the table.

How big should it be?

Your light fixture should be one-half to two-thirds the width of the table, and at least 12 inches (30 cm) narrower than the table so no one bumps into it.

Using two pendants

For smaller fixtures or a very long table, two identical pendants spaced evenly apart are a great solution.

Remember: these are guidelines

Feel free to adjust based on your needs, ceiling height and lifestyle, and don't be afraid to get creative. An oversized or dramatic fixture can become a stunning focal point.
